6th-12th July 2009
The week started with a lack of activity, no signings- not even a rumour- at Plainmoor. It wasn't what I wanted but it got worse when it became clear that the financial situation was much worse than anyone could have anticipated. It became clear why Matt Green was out on season loan, why the club couldn't keep Damien Davey, physio, or Paul Compton, youth coach.
However, less than a day later and Torquay had won their first pre-season friendly, against Buckland, 4-0 and triallist Ben Joyce, ex-swindon, was snapped up after scoring twice in that game. Things were looking up and then news that Torquay were looking to sign Kettering Town captain and central defender Guy Branston. The player at the heart of the best defence in the Blue Square Premier last year could still be coming to Torquay if they can agree terms by Monday.
So now what? Well we are looking forward to Wednesday's game home against Plymouth and the following game at Plainmoor on Saturday against Bristol Rovers. I'm sure there will be a good attendance at these games as fans will want to have a look at new signing Joyce and see if there is any other talent present. I know I do!
The contracts of Chris Hargreaves, Elliot Benyon and Kev Nicholson have been signed for another year at least and we are just waiting for Chris Robertson get the business done so we can all concentrate on the pitch.
I think i've covered everything from the week. If not I'll do it next week, please e-mail me if there is any news you think I've overlooked which is actually interesting.
Thank you Gulls fans.
