Knill Delighted With Tom Cruise
Manager Alan Knill has said he was delighted with the performance of Tom Cruise, and he's challenged him now to maintain that level of consistency in coming games.
Cruise has been with us for the last 14 months, but chances have been hard to come by for him so few could blame him for being a little frustrated, but this season Alan Knill has really challenged him to make a name for himself in the Torquay line up, and against Cheltenham the gaffer felt he more than achieved that and rose to the challenge.
Speaking to the Official Site he explained.
'He's been here a while and waiting for his chance. He got into the side last year, and then got sent off, and Kev (Nicholson) came back in and did particularly well. We just made the decision to change it, and it really was up to Cruisey to show he wants that shirt. If he performs like the did against Cheltenham, he will keep it.'
Knill adds that it's been something of a conundrum because he watches Cruise in training and sees the ability that he has, but it's never really seemed to translate to his performances on the pitch so it's been up to the coaching staff to try and eek that out of him and improve his overall game so it does come out during 90 minutes, and if Cheltenham is anything to go by, the manager believes the coaching staff have more than earnt their wages in helping to bring him on.
The former Arsenal youngster has only made 10 starts for Torquay since joining us in the summer of 2012, but he has made 12 appearances from the bench. The improvement he's shown during pre season training can probably be shown by the fact he's made 4 starts already this campaign, with only 1 appearance from the bench.
