'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Football Is A Cliche

Manager Alan Knill has admitted that sometimes football is so simple that clichés really sum up what's necessary during 90 minutes.

Speaking to the Official Site Knill referred to comments made by Chelsea manager, the apparently 'special' Jose Mourinho when he said that goals win games.

Not quite on the philosophical level of some gobbledegook about trawlers and sparrows or whatever it was, but the point remains true. Goals do win games. Metal posts make a goal. A plastic variant and inner bubble makes a football...we could go on forever.

But Knill believes it's very important that the squad remember that because whilst he's been delighted with the chances we have been creating in games recently, actually hitting the net has been our Achilles heel this season.

'Jose recently said that goals win games and it's a simple fact that's never going to change. You have to score.'

It's not just the scoreline that looks prettier when you hit the net Knill points out, it's the fact that when you take the lead the opposition then has to come at you in order to draw level and every team when attacking - especially as the game draws to a close - inadvertently leave gaps at the back that allow you the opportunity to counter quickly and actually kill the game off.

Knill proves this by pointing to our last home game against Hartlepool where we had numerous chances to take the lead, but in the end we had that much possession that they sat back and basically let us diddle about in the middle of the park which suited them, but completely stopped any incisive attacks we could make.

In training the manager added that he's had the team practicing everything they possibly could to make us sharper, more comfortable, more confidence and ultimately more composed in front of goal and one of these days it will have an effect on the pitch and when it does, he believes everyone will be delighted with the outcome.
