Alan Knill has talked about consecutive cleansheets and he's hoping that's something that will continue when we face Fleetwood but he knows we have to address the lack of clinical finishing as whilst it might be two games with a goal conceded (Hartlepool & Portsmouth), it's also two games with out a goal scored for us.
The Gulls were very unlucky not to score against Hartlepool although few would argue the Portsmouth game was out finest hour, but Knill is hoping it was one of them nights for us, and that we improve in all areas now we are back to league action.
Speaking to the Official Site ahead of this weekends action, the manager explained that he was generally pleased with the players who came in during the game against Portsmouth in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy but the overall performance wasn't something he was pleased with as we just didn't click and the tempo wasn't right.
'I could put it down to a lot of things and it's inconsistency. We have some young players, the team is still bonding but we needed to be a whole lot better. I'm delighted to have two clean sheets and the defence wasn't one of the departments I wasn't disappointed with, but I wanted more attacking play.'
Knill says there not much we can do about it now as it was just one of those games where things don't go for you, but he's expecting a response from the team in our next game as they have top show it was a bad day for them at the office and not an unfortunate sign of things to come.
As for the game against Fleetwood itself, he added that although they have spent well on good players, he's quietly confident that if we are on our game we can take all three points.
He knows it'll be a good test for us, but again it's one of those games where it could be a benchmark in terms of us assessing where we are against those teams who are expected to challenge so it serves as a marker for us showing us where we need to improve.
